Bio
NellĀ Gabiam is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Political science at Iowa State University. She received her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley in 2008. She has been doing research on migration for the past 20 years. Her earlier research focused on the politics of humanitarianism and development in Palestinian refugee camps in Syria. More recent research has focused on the effects of the ongoing war in Syria on the country’s Palestinian refugee population and on the resettlement experiences of refugees in the US. This more recent research takes a global perspective and engages with the issue of migration from the Global South (including the African continent) to the Global North. Her courses on migration as well as on humanitarianism and development include Africa as a regional focus.
