Professor Lawrence T. McDonnell (Ph.D., Illinois, 2014) is a historian of 19th and early 20th century America, with special focus on slavery and emancipation, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the US South, and the American transition to capitalism. In addition to his first book (Performing Disunion: the Coming of the Civil War in Charleston, South Carolina [Cambridge, 2018]), he has published and presented research on slavery and emancipation in the US South and the Anglo Caribbean, and served as associate editor at the Freedmen and Southern Society Project at the University of Maryland, editor of Gale’s Slavery and Antislavery digital database, and ProQuest’s History Vault.
